Today the four leaf-clover, which is called oxalis deppei in Latin, is often given to relatives and friends. Yet! a four-leaf clover which has been found on one's own is commonly believed to ward off evil, protect from misfortune and bring good luck in gambling. Moreover common knowledge holds it that pupils can improve their grades by keeping dried clover leaves in their schoolbooks and grant themselves good dreams by placing four-leaf clovers beneath their pillows. According to a legend which has been handed down through the centuries the life of an emigrant was saved due to finding a four-leaf clover. Picking the clover on a private estate, the man was arrested and therefore missed the ship's departure. Some time later, the newspaper reported that the ship had sunk and there were no survivors.
The legend of the four-leafed clover is already more than 2000 years old and originated at around 200 BC.
Due to these four-leafed clovers' rarity (common clover is three-leafed) only druids were in possession of these special ones.
The term "druid" means "sage of the oak" or "the man who knows the oak tree". Every year the druids held their gatherings (thing) deep in oak forests. The druids believed that wearing a four-leafed clover was powerful enough to prevent bad fortune. The form of a cross was thought to be the symbol of the perfect unity (www.gluecksbambus.de).
The French comic book artists and scriptwriter Uderzo and Goscinny who are best known for their work on the Astérix books also used the druid Miraculix’ quest for a four-leafed clover for their album No. IV "Astérix and the Big Fight".
